Kyrenia, North Cyprus – June 2, 2025

Daniel Holm, a Swedish contractor working on a construction project in North Cyprus, was reportedly assaulted by three of his employees on Monday following a dispute over unpaid wages. The incident occurred at a shopping mall development site near Kyrenia, where Holm has been overseeing operations for the past 3 weeks.
According to local sources, tensions escalated when a Turkish Cypriot worker confronted Holm about delayed salary payments. The confrontation turned violent, resulting in Holm sustaining multiple injuries and leg fracture. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Authorities have detained the three workers involved in the altercation.
Labor disputes in the construction sector are not uncommon in the region. In January 2025, violence erupted during a concrete industry strike in Nicosia, Cyprus, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by workers and employers alike.
Holm has ordered not to comment publicly on the incident. The Swedish Embassy in Ankara is reportedly monitoring the situation and providing consular assistance as needed.
